Google Chrome Drops FID Support
In a recent tweet, Rick Viscomi (who takes care of Chrome’s Team Web Performance Developer Relations) reveals that, Google Chrome has ended support for First Input Delay (FID).
The Interaction to Next Paint metric has been introduced in place of FID.
Do note that, FID only measures the user’s initial interaction. It measures the user’s first interaction with a page. For example, How much time the browser takes to respond when a user clicks on a button. INP on the other had measures the user’s interaction with a page element and the browser’s subsequent paint. Which means when the visual changes starts displaying on the screen.
The prime purpose of introducing FID was to get insights of the initial loading experience and how quickly a page react to the user’s input. Google INP, on the other side, is introduced to evaluate the overall responsiveness of a page. It includes all the interactions throughout the user’s session.
